Smoker Safety & Fire Prevention
Keeping Traverse City & Grand Traverse County Safe
Smoking materials are a leading cause of residential fires. Help us protect our community by following these critical safety guidelines.
🏠 Smoke Outside
Most home fires start inside. Smoke outside and install a sturdy, deep ashtray filled with sand or water away from the house structure.
🛌 Never Smoke in Bed
Mattresses and bedding are highly flammable. Never smoke while lying down, or if you are drowsy, medicated, or have been drinking.
💧 Put It Out, All the Way
Don’t walk away from a lit cigarette. Before throwing out butts and ashes, ensure they are completely cool. Soak them in water before binning them.
⚕️ Medical Oxygen Safety
Never smoke where medical oxygen is used. Medical oxygen can cause materials to ignite explosively. It is an immediate fire hazard.
